Red-hot Saka could match Wright's 29-year record

Ian Wright and Bukayo Saka

Having enjoyed a blistering start to the season so far, Bukayo Saka could be in line to equal a club record that has stood for nearly three decades.

Our attacker has been hugely productive in the Premier League this campaign, having either scored or assisted a goal in seven of his eight appearances so far.

His season kicked off with a fabulous strike against Nottingham Forest, and also netted against Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth, to take his tally up to four for the campaign. Meanwhile, assists have come against Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea last weekend as he continues to be a huge source of goals for Mikel Arteta’s team.

In fact, the only game in which he hasn’t had a goal involvement came at Crystal Palace on matchweek 2, when he selflessly handed over penalty-taking duties to Martin Odegaard.

That means that he has scored or assisted in his last six league encounters, and should Bukayo make another impact against Sheffield United on Saturday, he will become our first player to have a goal involvement in seven consecutive league games since Alexis Sanchez achieved the feat in April 2016.

However, you have to go back to 1994 for the last time an Englishman managed to do that in our colours, when Bukayo’s friend Ian Wright enjoyed one of his many purple patches.

Wrighty’s streak began in September of that year when he netted against Newcastle United, and would go on to also score against West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Coventry City and Leicester City in successive matches for George Graham's side.

Having scored on his last home appearance against Sheffield United in October 2020, Bukayo will be hoping that he can repeat the feat to move alongside one of our greatest-ever strikers, and almost certainly prompt a swift exchange of good-natured messages between the pair!
