Pre-Match Report

Preview: Manchester City v Arsenal Women

City women preview

We travel to Manchester City’s Academy Stadium for our penultimate Barclays Women’s Super League game of the season on Sunday.

It’s a 2.15pm kick-off as we look to end the season on a high, while Gareth Taylor’s side know that a win would give them a great chance of being crowned WSL champions come May 18.

Hunting down the title

Man City Women celeb

Man City are looking strong in their pursuit of the WSL title, having won their last 14 league games.

That run stretches back to November 19, 2023 and, since then, there have been big wins against Tottenham Hotspur (7-0), Liverpool (5-1), West Ham United (5-0) and Bristol City (4-0).

In that 4-0 win in Bristol last weekend, it took City until the 62nd minute to make the breakthrough courtesy of Mary Fowler. She then netted her brace in the 75th, before an Amy Rodgers own goal and 99th minute strike from Alex Greenwood confirmed the three points.

What the managers say

Eidevall: “Our mindset this weekend is only to win. Let’s be honest, one point gives us absolutely nothing in regards to where we are in the league table. The only thing that can potentially give us something is to win, so that’s our aim and that’s what we’re going to do our very best to do.

"I think next season we should be in a very, very strong situation to compete given that we also have a strong transfer window. So I can see that. While people might see that we’re standing still because we might be finishing in the same position in the league, I see a big difference in the story but also with underlying numbers with our performance.” Read every word from Jonas’ pre-match press conference.

Gareth Taylor

Taylor: ““We’re fighting for that title but with regards to the other night nothing’s changed to what we face at the weekend.

“It’s about controlling what you can control so watching a game where that can happen is difficult."

Team news

Sabrina D'Angelo in action for Arsenal against Manchester United

Sabrina D'Angelo will be back in the squad this weekend, Jonas Eidevall confirmed in his pre-match press conference. Vivianne Miedema will be unavailable as she needed minor treatment on her knee.

Leah Williamson is fit having come off as a precautionary substitution against Everton last weekend.

Facts and stats

Alessia Russo celebrates scoring against Chelsea
  • We have won our last two games against Manchester City in the WSL by a 2-1 scoreline and could be the second team to win three in a row versus the Cityzens in the competition after Chelsea, who did so between November 2021 and September 2022.
  • We have won more points (W2 L1 - 6 points) in games involving the top three teams in the Women’s Super League this season than both Manchester City and Chelsea (4 points each).
  • Alessio Russo has scored in each of her last three WSL appearances, never previously netting in four straight in the competition; the forward has now matched her goal return from last season (10 goals).
