Wenger - Szczesny’s save so important

Arsene Wenger says Wojciech Szczesny’s role in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Cardiff City on Saturday should not be underestimated.

With the Gunners leading 1-0, the Poland international made a stunning reaction stop to push away Fraizer Campbell’s close-range header.

"Quality players can make a difference. But you [still] need your keeper to make the save that keeps you in the game"

Wenger’s side went on to score two late goals to secure the victory, and the manager was grateful for his goalkeeper’s input at a vital time.

“Szzcesny made a very good save at a very important moment,” he told Arsenal Player. “Top-level football is like that; your keeper can keep you in the game when it is needed.

“Quality players, when you have as many as we have, can make a difference. But you [still] need your keeper to make the save that keeps you in the game.

“We had the right concentration level that was needed and good solidarity - we could see that we didn’t take our chances early on but still maintained our focus. And [we had] a great defensive performance again and that is why we won this game.

“In the last 20 minutes we took advantage of our chances. Giroud didn’t score, Ozil didn’t score, Wilshere didn’t score, but then you have Ramsey and Flamini turning up and that for me is the sign of a quality game.”
