Wojciech Szczesny admits Bayern Munich deserved their victory in Tuesday night’s Champions League last-16 clash at Emirates Stadium.
Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller gave the German side a two-goal lead inside the first 21 minutes, before Lukas Podolski headed Arsene Wenger’s team back into contention.
"Nobody believed that we could do it against Milan and we almost did it. You never know in the Champions League"
But Mario Mandzukic struck late on to seal a 3-1 victory and Szczesny acknowledges that Jupp Heynckes’ team merited their win.
“Bayern were the better side,” he said. ”They created more chances and probably deserved the win. We hoped that we could pull one back in the second half and hopefully gain some momentum.
“We were pushed back in the first half. We just tried to get a goal back [after the break] and that’s what we did. But they’re a quality opponent and it’s hard to get momentum against them. They defended very well and managed to score a third goal as well.
“It won’t be easy [in Munich]. They’ve showed their qualities today and they’ll be even stronger at home.
“Hopefully we can learn from it and go there with the belief that we could hopefully get through. Nobody believed that we could do it against Milan and we almost did it. You never know in the Champions League.“
