Arsenal Ladies Captain, Alex Scott, has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list with an MBE.

Alex has received the award for her "outstanding contribution to Women's Football".

A product of the Arsenal Ladies Centre of Excellence, Alex first joined Arsenal aged eight. She is an invaluable member of Arsenal Ladies, having helped the team to many honours throughout her career.

Alex has also excelled at national Level, with more than 100 appearances for the English national team. Furthermore, she also represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.

Aside from her successful career on the pitch, she has worked to create awareness for women's football, with an aim to encourage young girls to take up the game.

Alex supports Arsenal's wide-reaching community work, and earlier this year travelled to Iraq to visit a football project funded by The Arsenal Foundation, in partnership with Save the Children.

The Arsenal Foundation funded two artificial football pitches within camps in Khanaqeen, Iraq, for children and families who had been forced to flee their homes.

The pitches provide youngsters living there with a safe space to play, but Alex visited the project with a hope to inspire the young girls there to play football.

Arsenal chairman, Sir Chips Keswick, said: "This is much deserved recognition for Alex for her outstanding commitment to women’s football.

"Alex is a leader and a role model on and off the pitch. She has always been fully supportive of our community work both locally and around the world. Her trip to Iraq inspired many young girls to play football, and her support on this project in particular was immeasurable."

Alex uses her growing media presence to continue to raise awareness for women's football and earlier this year she featured on Bear Grylls' Mission Survive, where she won the survival expedition. In doing so, she became the first professional female footballer to win an achievement of this kind on a television series.
