International Watch: Alexis scores twice

Alexis celebrates v Mexico

A number of Arsenal players have been in international action over the past week.

Mohamed played the entirety of this important win in Borg El Arab. Mohamed Salah's penalty gave Egypt a first-half lead, before the same player set up Abdalla El Said to double the advantage late on.

Switzerland 2-0 Faroe Islands - Sunday, November 13

 

Granit won his 50th senior international cap as Switzerland maintained their 100 per cent record at the top of their World Cup qualifying group with this home win. Eren Derdiyok opened the scoring after 27 minutes and captain Stephan Lichtsteiner secured the victory in the game's closing stages.

England 2-2 Spain - Tuesday, November 15

 

Spain's comfortable World Cup qualifying win over Macedonia will live long in Nacho's memory after he scored his first senior international goal. The full back calmly guided a volley into the far corner shortly before full-time. An own goal before half-time and a Vitolo goal just after the hour had put La Roja in control, with Aritz Aduriz completing the scoring late on. The defender was then an unused substitute against England.

Wales 1-1 Serbia - Saturday, November 12

 

Aaron played the entirety of Wales' frustrating World Cup qualifier draw against Serbia in Cardiff. Gareth Bale put Chris Coleman's side in front after half an hour, but Aleksandar Mitrovic's late header gave Serbia a precious point.

Alex played 75 minutes, and thrilled the crowd with an audacious rainbow flick, as Nigeria secured an important World Cup qualifier win over Algeria in Uyo. Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel gave the Super Eagles a two-goal lead and, though Nabil Bentaleb gave Algeria hope midway through the second half, Moses wrapped up the win in second half stoppage time.

France 0-0 Ivory Coast - Tuesday, November 15

 

Laurent played the entirety of the second half while Olivier was a 63rd-minute substitute in France’s goalless friendly draw against Ivory Coast. Previously, the duo had completed all 90 minutes as France came from behind to beat Sweden in their World Cup qualifier.

Italy 0-0 Germany - Tuesday, November 15

 

Shkodran helped Germany keep their sixth consecutive clean sheet, playing the full 90 minutes in his country's goalless draw against Italy. The defender was also on the bench for Germany's comprehensive World Cup qualifying win over San Marino when former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry starred, marking his international debut with a hat-trick.

Theo played 63 minutes of England's 2-2 draw against Spain at Wembley. Adam Lallana's penalty and Jamie Vardy's header gave Gareth Southgate's side the lead, before Theo's strike was well saved by Pepe Reina. Spain hit back in the closing stages, though, with Iago Aspas and Isco scoring in stoppage time to secure a draw for the visitors. Previously, the Arsenal duo had been unused substitutes in England's World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

Colombia 0-3 Argentina - Tuesday, November 15

 

David kept a clean sheet in Colombia's 0-0 draw with Chile. The result ensured that Colombia remain third in their World Cup qualifying phase. David played the full 90 minutes as Colombia lost 3-0 to Argentina. Lionel Messi opened the scoring after 10 minutes, before Lucas Pratto and Angel di Maria added to the scoreline.

Chile 3-1 Uruguay - Tuesday, November 15

 

Alexis did not feature as Chile drew 0-0 with Colombia in Barranquilla.

Alexis then scored twice and played 84 minutes as Chile came from behind to win 3-1 against Uruguay in Santiago. Edinson Cavani put the visitors in front, before Eduardo Vargas levelled the scores. Alexis then put La Roja into the lead when he spun away from his marker before firing the ball inside the near post. He then charged onto a long ball before beating Fernando Muslera to make the result safe.

England U-21 3-2 Italy U-21 - Thursday, November 10
France U-21 3-2 England U-21 - Monday, November 14

 

Calum played the full 90 minutes as England Under-21 won 3-2 against Italy at St. Mary’s. Demarai Gray scored the opener for the Young Lions, before quickfire strikes from Andrea Conti and Federico Di Francesco put the visitors in front. Lewis Baker then levelled the scores, before a dramatic late winner from Jack Stephens, after Calum’s initial header had been parried back out by Pierluigi Gollini. Rob did not feature. 

Rob played 81 minutes as England Under-21s lost 3-2 to France in Bandoufle. Duncan Watmore’s strike gave the Young Lions the lead, before a double from Celtic striker Moussa Dembele turned the game on its head. Lewis Baker’s free-kick levelled the scores in the 80th minute, but Wylan Cyprien responded with a free-kick of his own to secure the win for the hosts.
