'I felt like the best in the world’

By Lloyd Webb

Lauren says his first goal for the club against Liverpool on his home debut in 2000 made him feel “like the best player in the world.”

The defender would score a further six times in 159 appearances for the Gunners, but opened his account with a volley inside the box to secure a slender 1-0 victory at Highbury.

“[It was a] big team, big game and scoring is something you always dream about, but you never knew it was going to happen and it happened that day,” Lauren told Arsenal Player.

“You feel like the best person and best player in the world. It was fantastic, I would love to repeat it again! I wish I could go back to that moment and do it again. Your first game, in front of your home fans - it was great scoring that goal against Liverpool.

“The game was relevant as it was against one of your rivals. I was really lucky because it was a dream come true because it was your first game at home, you score and you win against Liverpool. It was fantastic, and is something I will always keep in my memory.”
