As another season draws to a close, Arsenal can look back with pride on a campaign that offers genuine cause for optimism.
Per Mertesacker was a near ever-present throughout 2014/15, and here he explains some of his defining moments from the past 10 months.
July 2014 - Arsenal go summer shopping
In contrast to previous summer transfer windows, the club got much of their business done over the course of a frenetic July. In the space of a month, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina, Calum Chambers and - most significantly - Alexis Sanchez all arrived. Danny Welbeck would later join on transfer-deadline day as Arsene Wenger reshaped his squad for the campaign ahead.
“It was really important to get some early signings so everyone was on board for pre-season,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player. “We were all excited about the new boys and how quickly they all settled. Every one of them gave a huge contribution to our squad and we didn’t lose someone who was really a main part of last season’s squad so it was a really good start.”
Mertesacker was right to be excited. Alexis went on to score 25 goals in 52 games as he collected the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award, while the rest of the summer signings all made a significant impact.
