Walti: 'It's about building relationships'

We returned to winning ways in the Women’s Super League with victory over Everton on a brisk Saturday afternoon.

Lia Walti earned a Player of the Match award for her excellent performance in midfield and caught up after the game to share her reflections.

"I think we started really well in the game and we created a lot of chances," said Walti. "Unfortunately, we couldn't score more than two and then it was a tight second half where we got pushed back really deep in our half."

After going ahead early through Caitlin Foord, the visitors nabbed a surprise equaliser in the first half. However, our Swiss midfielder was there just before the break with a delicate cross for Beth Mead that would eventually prove to be our winner.

"It was an important moment. If you can score right before half-time, that’s always mentally good. So I was happy for the team that we could into half-time with a lead.

"In the second half, I think we could have finished the game off early second half and we didn’t. In the end, Everton also had their chances and their quality in their attacking third."

On that struggle with goalscoring efficiency, Walti believes that it will come in time.

"Firstly, it's about building relationships to create these angles to then create chances and create options to cross. I think today we sometimes crossed a little bit too much in the first half or we were rushing the last pass a little bit.

"We just to put a little bit more focus in this last pass and the last third. But it will come."
