Jonas praises squad depth in City win

Jonas Eidevall was delighted to have plenty of fantastic options at his disposal to turn the game around in Sunday’s 2-1 win away to Manchester City.

“It’s a performance to be proud of and a result to be proud of,” he told us after the game. “With the way we played, I think we had a lot of belief on the pitch and that came from our performance. We were feeling that we were doing a lot of good things in the game and that obviously helps to create the momentum that was needed.”

Jonas was able to use all five of his permitted substitutions throughout the second half, with Kim Little, Steph Cately, Caitlin Foord, Stina Blackstenius and Laura Wienroither all coming on and three out of the five being directly involved in our two goals.

“It’s about starting the game strong but also finishing the game strong,” Jonas added. “We have a phenomenal squad and a really competitive bench and I think you can see that today. We were able to bring so many fresh legs on in the second half and that helped us create the momentum that we needed to win the game today.

“It’s great because that’s the team we want to be. Not only having the mentality to not give up, but to stick to playing our way and I think that’s what we can be extremely proud of. No matter what the result would’ve been today, we could’ve looked ourselves in the mirror and said that we played our way, did our best, were brave and courageous, we expressed ourselves the way we wanted to and a lot of times that also gets associated with a good result.”

Coming towards the end of a season that has seen us retain the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup and compete with Manchester City and Chelsea in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Jonas is hoping to give Gooners another three points to enjoy at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the final game of the season on Saturday, May 18.

“In front of our home fans, who have been incredible the whole season, also today they gave me goosebumps,” Jonas said. “The support you give the team and the way you travel up to Manchester, you’re amazing. You’re such an important part of the journey and of course we want to finish strong with you at Borehamwood.”
