Internationals: Gunners in Nations League drama

There was plenty of UEFA Women’s Nations League action on Tuesday night with a number of our Gunners involved.

Katie McCabe produced a fantastic finish from outside the box and won Player of the Match as Republic of Ireland beat local rivals Northern Ireland 6-1 to finish top of League B Group 1 with six wins from six games, 20 goals scored and just two conceded.

Top of League A Group 4 are Spain with 15 points following their 5-3 win at home to Sweden, which Laia Codina came on at half-time in.

For Sweden, Amanda Ilestedt and Stina Blackstenius both played 90 minutes and Stina scored Sweden’s third goal of the match, which put them 3-1 up before Spain’s comeback.

She also assisted the second goal, scored by Kosovare Asllani. Sweden finish third in the group on seven points.

Netherlands dramatically snatched first place in League A Group 1 from England as they beat Belgium 4-0 at home. Victoria Pelova played 88 minutes, having assisted the opening goal for Lineth Beerensteyn, while Vivianne Miedema came on in the 66th minute.

Netherlands finished top of the group, level on points with England but with better goal difference.

That’s despite the Lionesses 6-0 win away to Scotland, which was marginally not enough to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals and the prospect of representing Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Beth Mead played 65 minutes of the game for Sarina Wingman’s side, getting the assist for Alex Greenwood’s opener and scoring the fourth goal of the game

Alessia Russo came on in the 65th minute.

Manuela Zinsberger and Frida Maanum went head-to-head as Austria won 2-1 at home to Norway. Austria finish second in League A Group 2 with 10 points, five ahead of Norway.

Denmark were beaten 1-0 at home to Iceland, Kathrine Kuhl playing 90 minutes for the home side, meaning they finished second in League A Group 3 with 12 points, three ahead of Iceland and one behind Germany.

Lia Walti and Noelle Maritz both played 90 minutes of Switzerland’s 3-0 defeat away to Italy. They finish bottom of League A Group 4 with just one win from six games.

Canada played a 1-0 friendly win at home to Australia, which Cloe Lacasse,

Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross all got 90 minutes in for their respective nations.
