Gabriel on playing for Brazil and World Cup hopes

Gabriel is set to take part in Brazil’s World Cup 26 qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina during the November international break.

Our centre-back says it’s a dream come true to play for his country.

“To play for Brazil is a big dream,” he told Arsenal.com. “The first time I was called up, I was at home and Edu called me. He said I was in the national team and I never forget this day.

“Also, my debut was so special. When I’m there I’m so happy. I spend a good time with the players.

“It’s a good feeling to sing the national anthem. It’s better and better every time I go to the national team.

“My family were there for my first goal and I was so happy to score.”

Gabriel Neymar

Of course, Gabriel isn’t the only Gunner fighting for World Cup qualification with Brazil, and it’s great to have Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus alongside him.

“It’s good for the club and for us,” he said. “The three Gabriels in the national team is so good for us, for everyone and the fans. It’s good for the club and we work very hard to be there.”

So who are Gabriel’s favourite Brazilian players from years gone by?

“I like Neymar so I’m happy to be there with him,” he said. “Now he’s injured but he’s a good guy. I love to be there because I watched Neymar when I was younger.

“A lot of players, Marquinhos as well, Thiago Silva… I’m so happy to be there.

“After Ronaldo came to Corinthians, of course I watched him a lot and he’s a top player.

“Coutinho is a top player and I’ve played with him as well for the national team.”

Brazil are third in their World Cup qualifying group with seven points from four games at the beginning of the international break, so naturally the aspiration is to get more wins on the board and qualify for the tournament as early as possible.

“I’m ready to work a lot to get to the next World Cup for the Brazilian people,” Gabriel added. “We need to be better at a lot of things but we have top players. We need to work and be ready for every game in order to win.”
