Elneny warms up for AFCON with win

Mohamed Elneny warming up for Egypt

Mohamed Elneny warmed up for the Africa Cup of Nations by playing all 90 minutes of Egypt's 2-0 friendly win over Tanzania in Cairo.

In what is the Pharoahs' only pre-tournament friendly game ahead of its kick-off on Saturday, our midfielder remained on the field for the entirety of the game which saw the hosts cruise to victory.

The opening goal came on 32 minutes when Mohammed Salah's through-ball was knocked into the net by former Aston Villa man Trezeguet.

It took Egypt until the 72nd minute to double their lead, which came in fortuitous circumstances when Salah saw a penalty hit the woodwork, but bounce back off Tanzania keeper Aishi Manula before finding the back of the net.

Elenny almost grabbed a late goal himself when he headed a corner wide of the mark with six minutes remaining, but enough had been done to send his side into the tournament on a high.

That was his 94th cap for his country, and he'll be hoping to reach a century during the competition which kicks off in the Ivory Coast this weekend.

Egypt start their quest to win their eighth continental triumph when they take on Mozambique in Abidjan on Sunday. Their second group game comes four days later when they face Ghana, and Mo will then hope to be in action against Cape Verde in the final group game on Monday, January 22.
