Elneny in Egypt squad for Africa Cup of Nations

Mohamed Elneny in action for Egypt

Mohamed Elneny will be heading to his fourth Africa Cup of Nations after he was named in Egypt’s 27-man squad for the tournament this month.

Our midfielder has joined up with the squad travelling to the Ivory Coast for the competition, seeking to win it for the first time having reached the final twice in 2017 and 2021.

Egypt are the most successful team in the competition’s 66-year history, lifting the trophy on seven occasions, and they start their quest to make it eight when they take on Mozambique in Abidjan on Sunday, January 14.

Their second group game comes four days later when they face Ghana, who will be without Thomas Partey after injury ruled him out of the tournament, and will continue his recovery from his thigh injury in London.

Mo will then hope to be in action against Cape Verde as Egypt complete the group stage on Monday, January 22.

Before then, they will warm up for the competition with a friendly against Tanzania on Sunday, January 7 in Cairo.

Mo is the most experienced member of the squad with 93 caps to his name across 12 years of service to the national team. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is the only other Premier League player named in the Pharoahs’ selection, who will captain the team.

The competition kicks off on January 13 and will run until February 11.
