Following our 9-0 win over Lewes Women on Sunday, Dominique Bloodworth highlighted the importance of a strong start to the season.
The Netherlands international has started in every game so far, keeping two clean sheets and helping us to pick up maximum points in all competitions – in contrast to last term.
We spoke to the versatile defender after the final whistle - and this is what she said:
on the team’s performance…
I think 9-0 is a very good performance and we knew that they played one league below us, but even though you still have to make sure that we performed well and we did that.
on what allowed them to play so much of the game in the final third…
I think we played pretty well on the ball and exploited the right areas so that we could cross, and I think that’s where a lot of the goals came from so that’s certainly a positive of today.
on the importance of keeping players fresh for Yeovil and West Ham…
It’s important because it's a big week with three games and you want to keep everyone fresh. The squad isn’t that big so it’s good that everyone came out good from the fight.
on keeping two clean sheets in our last two outings…
For every defender it’s a goal to keep a clean sheet. First game against Liverpool we did well with me and Louise, then today we played a three at the back and we didn’t really come under much trouble, so it’s always nice to keep a clean sheet because as a defender that’s always one of your goals.
on the importance of setting the standard from the off…
It’s very important. Last season we drew and lost some games that cost us playing in the Champions League so that’s something that we want to avoid, so even in the games that don’t seem like big games, we need to treat them like big games and realise that they matter most.
