Arteta: "That’s the spirit we want"

We made it 31 points from the last 33 available with a dominant win over Brighton on Saturday, and after the game Mikel Arteta was full of praise for the discipline and resilience his team showed throughout the 90 minutes.

We were always in command after Bukayo Saka dispatched a 33rd-minute penalty, before Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard added the gloss to the scoreline that our display deserved. Afterwards, Arteta said we were strong in all departments.

“I’m really happy,” he said. “They haven't lost here since August, so that tells you how strong they are and how good they are as a team. The boys were outstanding again.

“In attack, we showed real threat. We were really connected in our moves and we had a lot of purpose. We scored the first goal after a great little action from Gabby and then two brilliant goals in different ways.

“But then as well the discipline, the mental toughness that the team showed.”

We have conceded just four league goals throughout 2024, and this was our fifth consecutive shutout on the road, matching a club record. Gabriel epitomised the side’s fighting spirit when he celebrated an injury time block inside the area.

“That's the spirit and the body language that you're looking for in a team, so I’m really pleased that they give the importance to big things. Blocking a shot is a big thing in the box and I'm really pleased.

“The players are showing unbelievable consistency, a lot of desire and quality because you don't win that many games in a row.”
