We took part in Rwanda’s ‘Kwita Izina’, an annual ceremony that celebrates all the gorillas that have been born during the previous year.
The event is organised by the Rwanda Development Board and is the culmination of a week-long celebration of conservation around the country.
The ceremony took place at the Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, where our former player Lauren and former Women’s captain Alex Scott were both asked to name a baby gorilla in front of an energetic crowd of 65,000. Lauren named his gorilla ‘Ikipe’, which means team, and Alex called her baby gorilla ‘Izahabu’, which means gold or precious thing. In total, 23 gorillas were named at the event by high profile individuals from around the world.
Both Lauren and Alex also took part in incredible gorilla treks during their visit to Rwanda. They were fortunate enough to get within a few feet of the gorillas, while being taught all about them by the knowledgeable guides. This is one of the unique experiences that Rwanda offers to its tourists and we hope to showcase this and more to our fans throughout the partnership.
