Arsenal host World Cup Day 2018

To celebrate this summer’s FIFA World Cup, Arsenal Double Club hosted a very special event at Emirates Stadium as part of our latest national languages competition.

Two hundred and fifty secondary schools from across the UK entered the competition, with 20 lucky schools being selected to attend our World Cup Day.

More than 100 pupils took part in fun, educational activities in French, German and Spanish, featuring interactive content with first team players Laurent Koscielny, Alexandre Lacazette, Per Mertesacker, Sead Kolasinac, Hector Bellerin and David Ospina.

There was also a multilingual heads or tails quiz, which featured Alex Scott, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Jessica Samuelsson.

They also received some words of advice from three Arsenal employees, who have benefitted themselves from having language skills.

Later in the day, the pupils enjoyed a stadium tour and football activities at the Arsenal Hub led by Arsenal in the Community.

Project lead Steve Eadon, said: “The pupils looked like they had a fantastic time at Emirates Stadium, with many teachers thanking Arsenal for increasing their pupils’ confidence and enthusiasm to learn a language.

"Hopefully this will encourage pupils to continue learning a language at GCSE and beyond, enhance their and communication and cognitive skills and broaden their future employment, travel and social prospects.”

Although the competition is closed, schools are welcome to register to run the activity in school during the summer term. Click here to receive your free materials.
