Arsenal maintained their hold at the top of the Premier League
table on Sunday with a 6-1 win at Cardiff City.
England star Kelly Smith netted the Ladies' first from the
spot after Lianne Sanderson was brought down in the box. Katie
Chapman and Rachel Yankey also contributed to the scoresheet before
Arsenal conceded for only the second time in the league this
season.
The champions led 3-1 at the interval and were soon out of sight
in the second half when Chapman added her second of the game and
Sanderson grabbed a brace to take her tally for the season to 20
goals.
Arsenal have a five-point advantage over Leeds United. The teams
are yet to meet in the Premier League this season and will contest
the League Cup Final at Scunthorpe FC on Sunday, March 4.
Vic Akers' side will not play again until February 4 when
they welcome Reading Royals to Meadow Park in the Fifth Round of
the FA Women's Cup. The week's break is a result of
England's participation in the Four Nations Cup in China. Eight
of the Arsenal squad will be involved in the tournament.
