Arsenal Ladies stayed on course for an unblemished title
campaign after racking up their 20th win of the Premier League
season on Wednesday night.
Chelsea were the opponents on this occasion, as they were eight
days earlier when a 5-1 victory secured a fourth successive title
for Vic Akers' all-conquering side.
Since then Arsenal have been crowned European champions after
their aggregate victory over UmeƄ. A re-shaped team from
Sunday's UEFA Women's Cup Final took to the field to face
Chelsea but still had too much for their opponents thanks to
two goals from Lianne Sanderson and a welcome strike from Faye
White.
The Arsenal and England captain, working her way back to match
fitness following a long-term knee injury, was handed her first
full game of the season. She celebrated with a cool finish from
Anita Asante's well-timed pass after 34 minutes.
White's goal was Arsenal's second of the night.
Sanderson had given the champions the advantage after just two
minutes, heading home Rachel Yankey's left-wing cross.
The England striker scored again five minutes before the
interval with an elegant chip, taking her league tally for the
season to 27 goals. Lizzie Edwards grabbed a consolation for
Chelsea 12 minutes from time but Arsenal were comfortable
winners.
