Right back Brendon Batson was Arsenal's first black player.
After signing professional terms for the Gunners in January 1971, he made his league debut in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United in March 1972.
Batson struggled for regular first-team football at Highbury as understudy to the long-serving Pat Rice and, after 10 First Division appearances, he joined Cambridge United in January 1974.
Batson starred in their 1976/77 Fourth Division title triumph and followed manager Ron Atkinson to West Brom in February 1978.
The England B international featured in three UEFA Cup campaigns. When a knee injury ended his playing career he became the PFA’s deputy chief executive.
