Albert Beney

Albert Beney had a decent scoring record for Arsenal with six goals in 17 starts. But although he never let the Club down, he had to look elsewhere for regular first-team football.

Born in Hastings, Beney joined the Gunners for £225 in February 1909 and made his debut 10 days later in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

A week later, he announced his arrival in emphatic fashion with a hat-trick in Arsenal's 5-0 home win over Liverpool.

You'd have thought that would buy Beney some time but Harold Lee was preferred for the final four games of the 1908/09 season and made the most of his chance, scoring in each of those fixtures.

Lee was first-choice when the next campaign got underway but Beney didn't have to wait long for his chance, lining up at Middlesbrough in the third match of the season. He scored twice but Arsenal lost 5-2 and Lee went straight back into the side when he had recovered from injury.

Another obstacle was thrown in Beney's way midway through that season when William Buckenham joined the Club. He quickly became a regular and left Beney feeding off scraps.

The inside-forward made his final appearance for Arsenal against Sheffield Wednesday in March 1910 but left for Carlisle that summer.
