WHAT HAPPENED
We made a disappointing start to the Continental League Cup group stage on Wednesday night, as we were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea.
Caitlin Foord scored a stunner and Malin Gut made her full debut for the club, but they were the only positives from an otherwise frustrating evening.
It was an open game from the start with both teams pressing from the front - and it didn’t take long for Chelsea to open the scoring, when Magdalena Erikkson headed home from the first corner.
Foord then went on to level the scores with a stunning curling effort, cutting inside and lifting the ball over Carly Telford. But less than two minutes later, Guro Reiten restored Chelsea’s lead with a simple finish from close range.
The Norway international made it three just moments later, firing home from the edge of the area after Sam Kerr was denied by Manuela Zinsberger.
Following the restart, we looked the stronger side and carved out a number of golden opportunities, with Viv Miedema failing twice to provide the finishing touch to Beth Mead’s inviting deliveries.
But it just wasn’t enough, and late on substitute Beth England furthered Chelsea’s advantage, racing behind our defence to finish past Zinsberger and seal all three points.
WHAT IT MEANS
We're bottom of group B after matchday one with games against London City and Tottenham Hotspur still to come.
WHAT’S NEXT
Up next, we will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL on Sunday, October 11.
The game will take place at the Broadfield Stadium at 12.30pm (UK time).
