WHAT HAPPENED

We maintained our winning start in the Continental Tyres Cup with a dominant victory on the road against Millwall Lionesses

We began the game well, pressuring the hosts early on, as Beth Mead set her sights on goal, only to put her effort narrowly wide.

Not to be put off, the striker soon did open the scoring after an impressive run on the counter-attack after just ten minutes.

In search of an equaliser, the hosts came close through Charlie Devlin, who was denied by Anna Moorhouse, before Ellie Mason poked the ball in following a goalmouth scramble.

Just moments before the interval, Jordan Nobbs put us back in front, beating Millwall’s Sarah Quantrill directly from a corner.

Soon after the half-time break, Mead almost grabbed a third, as she hit the side netting, before Lauren James narrowly missed the target following a slick passing move.

Despite our dominance, Millwall were brought level through a spectacular goal from Ella Rutherford, who curled the ball in from the edge of the box.

With the full-time whistle nearing, we scored three times in quick succession to snatch the win, first through Nobbs, who this time struck from a free-kick.

Moments after coming on, Heather O’Reilly set up Dan Carter, while we added a fifth in the final minute through James from the spot, who converted after Mead had been fouled inside the penalty area.

WHAT IT MEANS

We remain top of our group in the Continental Tyres Cup table with six points.

WHAT’S NEXT

We face Reading at home in the Continental Tyres Cup on November 5. The Royals were 4-0 winners in their match against Watford.
