We were beaten by Manchester City for the second time in four days on a bitterly cold and frustrating evening at Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger had wanted a response from his side after our Carabao Cup defeat on Sunday, and we were certainly we were more of a threat going forward than at Wembley, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey testing Ederson in the first half.

The problem was that Pep Guardiola's side also looked like they had gone up a level from the weekend and, as soon as they opened the scoring through Bernardo Silva's curling effort, they took control.

Suddenly the visitors' slick attacking play was causing us big problems, and David Silva doubled their advantage as he finished off a flowing team move.

We were right up against it now, and it soon got even worse as City broke at pace again with Kyle Walker feeding the ball into the dangerous Leroy Sane, who converted from close range.

Petr Cech was called into action at the end of the first half to make a sharp save to deny Sergio Aguero, but we started the second period in bright fashion.

Within eight minutes of the restart we won a penalty as Mkhitaryan was taken down in the area, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw Ederson palm his penalty away.

The Gabon striker went close again as we sought a foothold back into the game, but there was no way through - although Cech had to make another smart stop from Aguero's low effort before the end on a disappointing night.

We travel to the south coast on Sunday to take on Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex.

We beat Chris Hughton's side 2-0 at the Emirates back in October, with first-half goals from Nacho Monreal and Alex Iwobi doing the damage.
