Often the creative hub at the heart of our attacking play, Mesut was in fine form again last season, reaching double figures for goals and assists.

The German playmaker netted his first career hat-trick in the Champions League group win over Ludogorets, then scored a magnificent late winner against the same team in the return match in Bulgaria.

Our player of the season in 2015/16, he added a third Emirates FA Cup success to his collection in May 2017.

Usually operating in the No 10 role, Mesut is able to slice open the tightest of defences with his exceptional passing ability, constantly looks to find space on the pitch.

Since arriving in the Premier League in 2013 he has created more chances than any other player, and contributed the most assists.

At home to Sunderland in May 2017, he created 12 goalscoring opportunities for his team-mates – the most in a single Premier League match since Opta records began.

Mesut was also known for his creativity at previous club Real Madrid, where he won the Copa del Rey in 2011 and La Liga title the following season. He spent three years in the Spanish capital, having previously starred for Schalke and Werder Bremen in his home country.

A seasoned international for Germany, he lifted the World Cup in 2014 and has scored at each of the past four major international tournaments. The five-time Germany player of the year also won the European Under-21 Championship in 2009
