Suicide prevention service opens on Sunday

Supporters can access a specialised suicide prevention drop-in service for the first time on a matchday at Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City. 

The confidential service will be open at The Arsenal Hub two hours before kick-off, during the match and two hours after full time. No appointment is needed, and the drop-in hub will give supporters the opportunity to speak to an NHS mental health specialist nurse at every Premier League match this season.

The service is part of our work alongside the Premier League as part of the Together Against Suicide campaign, which aims to raise awareness of this important issue and provide a service for supporters when they are most in need. 

According to research conducted by Samaritans, there were 5,565 suicides registered in England in 2023, with men being three times more likely to die by suicide. Our local borough of Islington has the second-highest rate of diagnosed depression and severe mental illness in London.

Together Against Suicide

Together Against Suicide was launched with a special event at The Arsenal Hub ahead of our home game against Nottingham Forest. Representatives including campaign ambassador and Arsenal supporter Roman Kemp, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting MP, Premier League CEO Richard Masters, and Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick met with members of our local community and participants of Arsenal in the Community programmes who face challenges with their mental health. 

They were also joined by partners from suicide prevention charity Samaritans, Islington Council and North London NHS Foundation Trust. The group spoke about the importance of coming together, the power football has to connect with supporters and removing the stigma from conversations around suicide.

It followed a special interview with Arsenal supporters Alex and Dan from the Bruised Banana podcast and Declan Rice. As part of TNT’s Connected series, Alex and Dan spoke with Declan about the tragic death of their friend and fellow podcast host Tom, and the importance of asking for help and being open about mental health struggles.
