Our under-21s continued their pre-season with a 2-0 defeat against National League South side Enfield Town at Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.
What happened
The hosts started brighter as our goalkeeper Remy Mitchell made a fine save to deny Lamar Reynolds when he was through on goal.
Ceadach O'Niell, starting on the right wing, showed promise in the early exchanges, hitting the wall with a free-kick he won. The Northern-Irishman did then find the net, only to be ruled out for offside.
Louis Zecevic-John peppered the Towners' goal throughout the first half, forcing Rhys Forster into action on several occasions to keep the score goalless.
The home side came closest to breaking the deadlock. New arrival Avan Jones fired a firm cross deep into our box, but captain Sam Youngs couldn't get enough purchase on his shot to direct the ball goalward. Youngs continued to be a threat, meeting Billy Leaonard's inswinging corner but Mitchell saved well from close range.
Soon after the interval, Mitchell was forced into action once more as the Hackney-born 'keeper superbly tipped Jones' half-volley over the bar.
Max Porter looked to his bench on the hour mark, seven changes were made to freshen up his formation, which saw O'Neill and Seb Ferdinand move into more attacking roles.
Our young Gunners came close to opening the scoring on the hour. Ferdiand neatly cut back to Demaine Agustien, who untangled Enfield's defence to free up a chance, but saw his shot curl over Forster's bar.
But it was our hosts who opened the scoring on 66 minutes as a long ball over the top from goalkeeper Forster found Reynolds in space, and the striker did well to lob Mitchell from distance.
In search of a quick response, our captain, Charles Sagoe-Jr, worked the ball well down the left flank, beating three Enfield players to shoot on target, forcing Forster to parry back into danger, but defender Xavier Benjamin worked back well to sweep out the danger.
Town were at the double with 10 minutes left of play. Long-throw specialist Joe Payne caught out our defence with a looping throw-in to find fellow substitute Harry Lodovica in the six-yard box. The striker used his height well to head home Enfield's second.
What’s Next
Our young Gunners are back in action for their fifth pre-season game on Saturday, August 2, as they travel to Melbourne Stadium to take on Chelmsford City. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm (UK time).
