The nine Year 10 girls formed part of the Almeida's community production, joining an 80-strong company made up of participants from Arsenal in the Community, Cardboard Citizens, All Change and Islington Community Group.

Written by Stephanie Bain and creatively directed by Dani Parr, 1000 (Millennia) was the third instalment of the Almeida's Islington Trilogy, following 24 (Day) in 2023 and 81 (Life) in 2025. The production explored Islington's rich history while imagining its future, creating a mythic origin story that reflected on how the borough came to be and what lies ahead.

Throughout the summer term, the girls rehearsed every Tuesday at The Arsenal Hub in preparation for four performances. Working alongside directors Ella Zgorska and Takiyah Kamaria, they showed tremendous commitment, with their togetherness, energy and talent shining through on stage.

Reflecting on the experience, Matina said, "This reminded me that confidence grows when you do what you love. Every rehearsal challenged me, every performance inspired me, and every character taught me something new. I'm so grateful for every moment at the Almeida – for the memories, the friendships and the opportunity to be part of something so special. This experience will always have a place in my heart."

Over the course of the year, the girls have enjoyed a range of memorable experiences through Lots to Explore, with one of the highlights being an invitation from Lotte to watch the England Lionesses train at St George's Park. The exclusive behind-the-scenes experience gave the participants the opportunity to see the European champions prepare at close quarters and meet members of the squad. It was an unforgettable day that left the girls inspired and motivated.

Launched in 2022, Lots to Explore was founded by Lotte Wubben-Moy in partnership with Arsenal in the Community to create a unique programme that combines football with creative opportunities for personal growth. Through free weekly sessions, the programme empowers teenage girls by building confidence, encouraging self-expression and creating a sense of belonging in a supportive environment.

In 2025, Lots to Explore received additional funding through the Players' Projects Pilot, supported by the Premier League and the Professional Footballers' Association. The initiative aims to strengthen the connection between players, football clubs and their local communities by placing players at the heart of projects that tackle societal challenges. This funding has enabled Lots to Explore to expand, supporting additional cohorts throughout the year and allowing more girls to benefit from the programme.
