The Arsenal Foundation has helped to fund Emmanuel Film Club, a social cinema gathering for older residents held weekly at Emmanuel Hornsey Road Church. Club regular Anna tells us about it.
“I found out about Emmanuel Film Club because I used to attend the church when I lived on Mayton Street, and I decided to go along simply because it sounded like a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
“I found out that the club was founded as a community activity that would bring people together from across the neighbourhood. It aims to build relationships, particularly among those who are isolated and lonely, and provide a safe and warm space for socialising, cultural input (via classic films) and a warm meal, which is free.
“I enjoyed my first visit tremendously – it was lovely to meet new people from my area and have that social aspect as well as watch a film. I’ll be honest, I’ve been to see so many now that I can’t remember which movie I saw first, but I do remember that along with everything else I really enjoyed the refreshments: burgers and hot dogs. And we all still really enjoy them now!
“Sadly, like so many social gatherings, the club had to close during the Covid pandemic, but it reopened in August 2022 and people started coming back immediately. The film clubs shows a whole range of movies and I’ve seen most of them. My favourites are always the old black and white ones.
“Going to the club has really benefitted me in so many ways. It has helped me get out of the house and make new friends, and I have introduced quite a few people to the club so our whole social and support network has grown. That has also led to learning about new places to visit.
“Courtney and Lionel, the church wardens who run the film club, among many other activities, are both brilliant. They have such a lovely, gentle way about them and are always so welcoming.
“The film club has made a big difference to my life and I always look forward to going. I know that when it’s a film day I will meet lots of nice people, be entertained and eat delicious food. I understand that the club was in danger of closing because the cost of living crisis and the impact of Covid meant the church was struggling financially, but that the grant from The Arsenal Foundation secured its future for 18 months. I just hope it is able to continue beyond that, because it will be an empty Saturday afternoon for a lot of people if not.
“Having lived in the immediate vicinity, I know how much Arsenal contributes to the community and I’m very grateful to the club – even if I am a Bradford City supporter!”
