Wenger on...the performance
"I feel we had a sloppy start, a post-European Cup match start. We were on the back foot at the start of the game, in the first 15 minutes, and they had a chance with Heskey. Then we became slowly livelier, and when we got into the game they got Cunningham sent off. Then it was a problem I didn't like at all, because I love to see the game 11 against 11 for the whole 90 minutes."

Wenger on...being patient, not taking chances and Maik Taylor
"For us of course it was a case of taking our chances, of being patient, and if we didn't take our chances unfortunately we had to choose the second solution. Only the kind of goal we scored today could beat them in the end or could beat him [Maik Taylor]. I must say credit to Taylor - he was absolutely outstanding today. I hope he doesn't play for Austria or Poland!"

Wenger on...Cunningham's red card
"I feel it was correct, but I would have loved to have seen the game 11 versus 11 because I feel we would have seen a much more interesting game than we saw and you know more about your side when you win a game with 11 against 11."

Wenger on...van Persie's goal
" I can understand that they feel hardly done [by] to concede a goal when you fight so hard, in the way that they conceded it is difficult to take. But they were tired, and we were a little bit tired at the end maybe, and Van Persie just got that deflected shot. Today I was happy to score a scrappy goal."

Wenger on...Jose Antonio Reyes
"On the one hand he was very lively, created many chances, on the other hand he got everything stopped by Taylor. But he had most of his shots from an angle where the goalkeeper is in a good position to save."

Wenger on...Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole
"We are stable at the back, we were not tested much today. I feel Sol will bring [to England] a mixture of calm and reassurance with his experience, and physical power which will be needed. Ashley was outstanding today because straight away at the beginning of the first half he put Pennant on the back foot and so Pennant spent a lot of energy running behind or after Cole and that shows you his characteristics as a player. He played against a good player in Pennant but made him do what he doesn't like to do."

Wenger on...the team selection
"I didn't start Van Persie because I felt Reyes and Ljungberg did well at Ajax as a partnership. I left Dennis out because he only practised one day and Van Persie because the two that played together [at Ajax], worked out."

Wenger on...van Persie's qualities
"He's class, and he has a terrific shot. When you see him in training taking a shot at goal, if the goalkeeper is not reading the ball he has no chance."
