GUNNERS HOCKEY TEAM
The Gunners Hockey Team has just completed another title winning season by clinching the London League Division 6 by beating Spencer 3-1 in the final game of the season. The unique project has many fascinating aspects, including the way it has developed players from Islington schools and introduced them to the minority sport. It is estimated that we have introduced over 14,000 Islington children to the sport over the past 20 years.

After gaining promotion last season by winning Division 7 the team has topped Division 6 since November. What is especially pleasing is the fact that most of the squad is made up from players under the age of 16 and supported by selected senior players. The outfit adopted this model sixteen years ago and has always competed in an adult league with more than its fair share of success. Representing parent club, Old Loughtonians HC based in Chigwell, Essex, the Gunners Hockey Team also provides a steady supply of young talented players for the club. In recent years it has become apparent that the project is not only a model sports development programme, it also has a valuable social impact for its participants. In a sport where players are still predominantly supplied through the public school system, the Arsenal Hockey Project has broken the mould by developing the sport in the heart of Islington.

A league and cup double are within sights as the team has reached the semi- final of the cup. It will not be the first time that they have achieved this double as the project has bagged an incredible five doubles in the past 16 years competing in adult league hockey.

ARSENAL IN THE COMMUNITY GAP YEAR PROGRAMME
Want to spend the year training as a football coach for Arsenal in the Community? You would learn with us for four to eight months, depending on experience, here in Islington before going abroad to one of our International Soccer Schools. Currently, the Gap Year coaches are in Singapore, Indonesia, Egypt and Greece! We are starting the application process very soon. For more information please visit the Community pages at www.arsenal.com or email Samir Singh at ssingh@arsenal.co.uk for more information.

A NEW INTERNATIONAL SOCCER SCHOOL IN THAILAND
We have just launched a new international Soccer School partner in Thailand in addition to the other Arsenal Soccer Schools in 17 different countries worldwide. We visit each Soccer School at least once per year in order to coach the coaches as well visit the schools and the players. Recently, Paul Shipwright, who is responsible for our partner Soccer Schools visited four of them.

At our Egyptian Soccer School, based at Wadi Degla, Cairo, there are 800 children playing four times a week, U15/U17 teams and both men and women's teams playing in leagues.

In Indonesia, there are 370 children playing at the school after just six months. Our partners there are also working with the Indonesian F.A. in order to develop an advanced programme.

At the Arsenal Soccer School in Singapore we now have enrolled 475 players, all playing in a league run by our partners, alongside the weekly coaching sessions. We wish our partner in Thailand every success.

For more information email Paul Shipwright at pshipwright@arsenal.co.uk or visit the Soccer School pages at www.arsenal.com.

PAUL WATSON

A fireman by trade, Paul started playing for the team as a guest player and has continued to help and support when needed.
