The DCMS, the Premier League, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust have come together to support a project that can contribute to delivery of more, and better, sporting opportunities for young people and that can make a difference to delivery of the ‘5 hour sport offer for young people'
Premier League 4 Sport project will work closely in partnership with Premier League Clubs, the YTS, Premier League and the National Governing Bodies in 4 sports - Badminton, Judo, Table Tennis and Volleyball, Netball and Hockey. The NGB's along with the Arsenal in the Community will identify a HUB Club whereby pupils from smaller (Satellite) centres can play matches, tournaments and events regularly as well as the chance to join the club.
Situated within proximity to each HUB Centre will be at least 2 Satellite clubs based in local secondary schools. These centres are open to any young person to turn up and play for one and a half hours per week (approximately 4.30pm - 6pm), over the course of 30 weeks each year (delivered by nationally qualified coaches). We hope that schools will energetically promote participation in their chosen sport(s) and give curriculum time support. Overall this project aims to reach over 500 young people across the 4 sports each school year.
Arsenal in the Community has recently introduced some special new features to its PL4S programme including:
- Club Membership Scheme
- Young Ambassador Programme
- Inter PL club tournaments and events
- Regular competition opportunities
- And much more...........
The proposed project seeks to create significant step change in how young people are supported to move from school to club (school-club links) and in how clubs are supported to reach out to schools (club to school links). It will utilise the experience and expertise of 4 National Governing Bodies of Sport and the network of School Sport Partnerships to build the capacity of sports clubs through the development of new satellite clubs on school sites, working alongside the powerful brand and community outreach programmes of Premier League Clubs.
Siobhan Atkinson, Community Development Executive at the Premier League said "It's fantastic to see how PL4S has really taken off in Arsenal FC. The development of new sports clubs in and around Islington will continue to give sporting heritage for the area. I'm delighted the Arsenal players have got behind the programme and showcasing their interest in other sports. I hope lots of young people will join the Arsenal Club Membership Scheme and access all the great benefits on offer. Who knows in a few years time we might be seeing a young player who started off at Arsenal going on to perform at the Olympics."
