Nicklas hit top form for Sunderland in March, firing four goals in his five Premier League matches. He kicked off the month with a penalty in the Tyne-Wear derby before adding goals against Liverpool, QPR and Manchester City. "I've not thought about his future at all," said Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill. "I've not mentioned it to him, there's no point in putting pressure on anyone at the moment. He's played very well and may think that with that type of performance he's still capable of breaking into Arsenal's squad."

Nicklas continued his rehabilitation from facial injuries, and made his comeback as a second-half substitute in Sunderland's 4-0 defeat to West Brom at the end of the month.
