Wednesday's clash between Panathinaikos and Arsenal at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium will be the seventh competitive meeting between the two sides.

Arsenal first crossed paths with the Greek giants in the first round of our 1980/81 UEFA Cup campaign.

We travelled across Europe for the first leg and returned home with a 2-0 advantage following goals from the unlikely source of Brian McDermott and substitute Raphael Meade.

The job was duly completed two weeks later when Brian Talbot scored the only goal at Highbury to give us a comprehensive 3-0 aggregate victory.

We had to wait almost 20 years for the next meeting with the Athens club.

Arsenal's 'Double' in 1998 saw us compete in the following season's Champions League where we were again drawn against Panathinaikos.

With Highbury operating at a reduced capacity due to UEFA regulations, the Club took the decision to play European 'home' games at Wembley Stadium. Panathinaikos were the first away team to take on the Gunners at the famous venue and were duly defeated 2-1 with the defensive duo Martin Keown and Tony Adams grabbing the goals.

By the time the return game had come around we had picked up just five points from a possible 15 and had been eliminated from the competition. Despite the Club fielding a side which gave valuable European experience to some of the fringe members of the squad, they pulled out all of the stops and recorded a stunning 3-1 away win through Alberto Mendez, Luis Boa Morte and Nicolas Anelka.

Panathinaikos finally recorded a win against Arsenal at the fifth time of asking when the two teams met in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League.

Giorgios Karagounis nodded the all-important goal in Athens after 25 minutes and Arsenal were again struggling to qualify from the first group phase.

Three weeks after this 1-0 defeat the two sides were back at Highbury after the brief experiment of playing at Wembley. Thierry Henry scored both goals (one a penalty) in a 2-1 win that kick-started our qualification push.
