Our tour of Arsenal supporters groups continues with a visit to Salt Lake City, Utah. This branch just going in 2010, but this group of fans has been growing ever since. As founding manager Brent Cheney once said, the members live for Arsenal:
“Being a Gooner is a way of life.”
Group Name: Utah Gooners
Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Year established: 2010
Number of active members: What was once a small cadre of eight supporters now has over 100 people checking in on Facebook.
Where we watch matches: Fiddlers Elbow -- 1063 (1/2) 2100 South, Sugarhouse, UT 84106. ?(801)463-9393
Where our members hail from: Utah, Oregon, California and London
Group’s favorite Arsenal moment: "The 6-0 win against Blackpool in 2010 was our first match-day viewing! Although the year of ‘The Invincibles’ would probably surpass any of our true favorite moments. Or perhaps the 1989 Final Match with Liverpool?"
Favorite Players: "Thierry Henry will always be looked up to, as well as Dennis Bergkamp. Arsène Wenger although not a player, is a great part of the team."
Why we are Gooners: "Really this comes down to the type of players on this club. Arsenal are a team of class. They have high standards and set the bar for what a team should be. There really aren’t any other clubs with standards like these. Arsenal are simply in a league of their own. We are drawn to them because they perform on a level that other teams are only now starting to discover. Of course, no other club on earth even comes close to our Gunners!"
Why Americans should be Arsenal fans: "The MLS just doesn't quite cut it for us and Arsenal is not something to be loved in Europe alone. Being a Gooner is a way of life. It is a lifestyle. We can learn so much from Arsenal as they have the kind of deep roots that can serve as an example to us."
"We can also hope that one day the football we see in America, can aspire to reach the level that Arsenal are at now."
