So much more than just the home of a sketch-comedy show, Portland is a unique and thriving city that also happens to be one of the most devoted soccer cities in the United States. It is also home to a loyal group of Arsenal supporters that has grown each year since its inception. You can always count on a welcoming crowd -- and plenty of witty banter throughout the match. As the group founder Luther Blanton once said:
“If you are an Arsenal supporter and are in Portland area, you NEED to be at Beulahland for every Arsenal match. It is a great place, and a great time. Plus the owner of the pub is a Gooner... which is all the better!”
Group Name: PDX Gooners
Location: Portland, Oregon
Year established: "We picked up official Arsenal America status in 2008."
Number of active members: "For your run-of-the-mill league match, there is always a solid turnout of about 20 Gooners, but for some of the bigger matches the pub has been packed to rafters."
Where we watch matches: Beulahland, 118 NE 28th Ave, Portland, OR 97232. (503) 235-2794
"Beulahland in Northeast Portland is our home and a fantastic place to watch games. The owner, Jimmy, is a die-hard Gooner and makes sure thant the doors are open at 7am for the weekend matches. There is even a second viewing room for overflow or to show a second game."
Where our members hail from: "Our regulars come from all over. There is plenty of local representation, but Portland is a city that brings in people from all over the country, so we also have supporters from Seattle to New York and everywhere in between. There is even an international flair with several people from the UK and other parts of Europe."
Arsenal in Portland: "From the Portland Timbers to the famed soccer program at the University of Portland, the sport is deeply embedded in our city's culture. The Premier League is hugely popular and there are an ever growing number of venues that show live Premier League and other European league matches. Sure, you'll see some ManU or Barcelona shirts as you walk around town, but the number of Arsenal supporters seem to outweigh them all. And there is no more loyal group than the Gooners at our home pub, Beulahland."
Favorite Arsenal moments: "Among our favorites would would have to be The Invincibles, Henry's celebration against Spurs, Arshavin's four goal night at Anfield and the Barcelona game in 2011."
Why we are Gooners: "It's simple: Arsenal play the beautiful game in the most beautiful way."
