The New Haven Gooners... braving the Connecticut cold
Meet the New Haven Gooners
As Arsenal's popularity in the United States continues to grow, Arsenal America branches are popping up in more and more cities. The next stop in our tour of supporters' groups is the home to Yale University, the Winchester rifle and the newest member of the Arsenal family: New Haven, Connecticut. As branch manager Thad Brown says:
"We're excited to be the first Connecticut supporters club, and we're looking forward to this season!"
Group Name: New Haven Gooners
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Year established: 2010
Number of active members: 25
Where we watch matches: We have a new home for the 2011/12 season: O'Toole's Irish Pub - 157 Orange St, New Haven CT 06510
Normal match start time: 10:00 AM
Where our members hail from: "Most are Connecticut locals, but we have some transplants from other parts of the US and even some internationals. The owner of Christy's and one of the bartenders are die-hard Gooners and both were born and raised in Ireland."
Group’s favorite Arsenal moment: "We're just starting up, so the great moments are in the future. How about lifting the Premiership trophy in 2011?"
Group’s favorite Arsenal players: "My all-time favorite is Bergkamp. Judging by the shirts I've seen we also have some Bendtner fans, a few Fabregas and van Persies and the odd Walcott. Judging by current form I expect we'll see a few Wilshere shirts soon as well."
Why we are Gooners: "Because we love the game and we love it beautiful."
Why Americans should be Arsenal fans: "Most of all because Arsenal play great football. Beyond that, Arsenal (like America) is international, with players from England and all over the world. Arsenal has a smart American investor on their board. And they play great football!"
