35. Football takes a back seat at Highbury

Cricket at Highbury

Highbury plays host to other sports 1916 to 1966

Until now almost all of our Highbury Highlights have involved football but the famous old ground has hosted a number of other sports as well.

On May 21, 1966 Muhammad Ali stopped Henry Cooper in the sixth round of their boxing match for the World Heavyweight title. The Briton had sustained a nasty cut over his left eye and referee Tommy Little called a halt with 1min 32secs gone.

Highbury has also hosted an number of cricket matches between Arsenal and Middlesex CCC. The first came for Denis Compton’s benefit year in 1949, and there was another for his brother Leslie in 1955. Inbetween those, in 1952, there was a floodlit game for Jack Young’s benefit.

Also, between 1916 and 1919, the ground played host to baseball matches between American servicemen based in the UK.

In 1921 there was a charity rugby match between England and Australia and in 1955 Highbury held a Ladies international hockey fixture between England and the US under floodlights.
