Wenger - Change of competition will help

Arsene Wenger believes a change of competition can help Arsenal rediscover their confidence following Sunday’s defeat at Everton.

The Gunners have picked up 12 points from a possible 30 in the Premier League and they face a fight to secure a top-four place.

However, Arsenal face Wigan Athletic on Saturday in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and Wenger feels it could lead to a change in fortunes.

"To play in a different competition will help us find confidence back and focus on our next game"

“Once you are in the semi-final you want to go through to the final,” he told Arsenal Player. “To play in a different competition will help us find confidence back and focus on our next game.

“We have to acknowledge that we must go back to basics and come in much stronger in the challenges, much stronger in the way we win the ball back, before we start winning games.

“At the moment I feel it is important to focus on the quality of our game before we dream of where we finish [in the league]. We have to come back to much better quality than we produced at Everton.”

Wenger admitted that the one piece of good news at Goodison Park was Aaron Ramsey’s return after three months out with a thigh injury.

“It is one of the positives and let’s hope he will get stronger week by week,” he said.
