Joel Campbell

Exciting Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Greek side Olympiacos where he made 43 appearances and scored 11 goals. 

The pacy attacker, who can operate in central or wide positions, has gained a wealth of experience since joining the Gunners from Deportivo Saprissa, from his home country, in August 2011.

Shortly after his transfer was confirmed, he signed for Ligue 1 side Lorient on a season-long loan, impressing during his year in France and scoring three goals – including a winner against eventual champions Montpellier.

In the 2012/13 campaign, he enjoyed another loan stint – this time in Spain’s top flight, with Real Betis. He scored twice for the Seville-based side and impressed with a series of lively performances.

Joel is a full international for Costa Rica and enjoyed considerable success at the 2014 World Cup, scoring one and setting up another as the Central American side reached the last eight of the tournament. His achievements also include a superb goal that secured a 2-2 draw with Spain in November 2011. He also scored the winner in a friendly in Wales the following year, while he netted once in the 2011 Copa America and twice in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Joel also excelled at under-17 and under-20 levels, bringing him to the attention of a number of top clubs before his move to north London.

Joel's first appearance for Olympiacos came in the narrow opening day win at Kalloni, He played a full 90 minutes in the win at home to Atromitos before completing just under an hour in the thrashing of Levadiakos as the Greek champions ended the month with a 100 per cent record.

September

Joel made five appearances for Olympiakos in September as the Greek side continued their strong start to their Super League campaign.

July

Joel joined La Liga side Real Betis on loan until the end of the season.

August

Joel made his Real Betis debut as a second-half substitute in their 2-1 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

September

Joel was sent off in Real Betis' defeat to Atletico Madrid. After being introduced as a second-half substitute, he was shown two yellow cards in the space of just 19 minutes. It was his only appearance of the month.

October

Joel has featured on a regular basis to help Real Betis’ impressive start to the season.

November

Joel was on target as Costa Rica drew with Bolivia in a friendly. He also made two starts for high-flying Real Betis in the Primera Division.

December

Joel continued to play his part for Lorient, featuring in crucial Ligue 1 matches against Lyon, Montpellier and Marseille.

January

Joel featured twice for loan club Lorient during the month, and scored during their 2-2 draw at Nancy.

Joel came off the bench twice for Lorient as they drew with Auxerre and then lost to Valenciennes.

Joel struggled to break into the Lorient first team in March and instead made three appearances for Lorient's B team in the CFA.
