In February 2016, SportPesa became Arsenal’s official betting partner in Kenya. This long-term partnership is geared towards helping SportPesa grow their business in Kenya but is also part of their commitment to developing football standards in the country.
In May 2016, Sol Campbell visited Kenya to support the launch of SportPesa’s first training camp in partnership with Arsenal. The training targeted 60 Kenyan certified coaches from SportPesa Premier League (SPL) clubs and from grassroots football clubs across the eight different regions in Kenya.
Over the six days, experienced Arsenal-trained coaches led sessions on the Arsenal coaching philosophy with a particular focus on talent identification. U18 teams from the top Kenyan Premier League clubs were invited for a live talent scouting event where the coaches could apply their learnings from the week.
For the final day, local academy teams were invited to take part in a morning coaching session, with the afternoon dedicated to a 7-a-side fundraiser tournament including a team from the Arsenal Kenyan Supporters Club.
Arsenal Legend Sol Campbell helped take part in this coaching session, imparting his knowledge and experience to the young academy players. Sol also helped to support the closing ceremony of the training camp which featured speeches from SportPesa CEO Ronald Kaurari, Kenyan Premier League CEO Jack Oguda and President of the Kenyan FA Nick Mwendwa, as well as a speech from the legend himself.
