Xhaka leads Switzerland to winning start

Granit Xhaka celebrates Switzerland's goal against Cameroon

Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland to an opening win at the 2022 World Cup as his side beat Cameroon 1-0 at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.

In a game of two halves, the African side had the better of the first 45 minutes and carved out plenty of chances but Granit's side managed to get into the interval still level, and that would prove crucial as they grabbed the only goal of the game just three minutes after the restart.

Granit was involved in the build-up, playing an incisive pass that put his team into an attacking position, and led to Xherdan Shaqiri squaring for Breel Embolo to fire home from close range.

The Swiss dictated the game from that point and only some great saves from Cameroon keeper Andre Onana kept his side in the contest, leading Granit to celebrate victory and stretch his nation's unbeaten run to six games and take a huge step towards reaching the last-16 for the fourth time in the last five editions of the global showpiece.

Having now appeared in three World Cups, Granit will next be in action against Brazil on Monday, November 28 before competing the group stage against Serbia on Friday, November 2.
