One Gunner was in World Cup action on Friday. Scroll down to find out how they got on.
Mohamed Elneny played the entirety of Egypt’s opening World Cup fixture in Group A, as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat in the dying moments against Uruguay.
It looked as though Elneny and co were on course for an impressive point, with our midfielder producing a commanding midfield performance, but in the 89th minute Jose Gimenez leapt high to head home from a corner and snatch the win for Uruguay.
Meanwhile, Nacho Monreal was an unused substitute in Spain’s 3-3 draw with Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead with a penalty, before Spain equalised through Diego Costa.
Ronaldo restored the advantage with a low-driven effort, but once again, Costa equalised from close range. Fernando Hierro’s side were set to leave with all three points when Nacho Fernandez’s long-range effort found the back of the net, but with just two minutes left on the clock, Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with an exquisite 25-yard free-kick.
