World Cup: Dutch trio reach the final

Roord and DvD

Four of our stars were in World Cup action on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Read on to find out how they fared.

Vivianne Miedema, Danielle van de Donk and Jill Roord all starred in Netherlands’ 1-0 win over Sweden on Wednesday night, booking their place in the Women’s World Cup final.

It was a tightly-contested encounter over 90 minutes with chances arriving few and far between, but deep into extra time Jackie Groenen latched on to a deflected pass by van de Donk and fired into the bottom corner.

Our Dutch trio are now set to face the USA in the final on Sunday, July 7 with kick-off at 4pm (UK time).

Elsewhere, Leah Williamson and Beth Mead’s World Cup campaign came to an end on Tuesday night, as they were beaten 2-1 by the USA.

Christen Press opened the scoring with a guided header past Carly Telford in the 10th minute, before Ellen White levelled the score with a first-time finish, courtesy of a stunning delivery from Mead.

However, the USA pushed on and less than 10 minutes later restored their advantage through Alex Morgan, who broke free of the Lionesses’ defence and headed home the winner.

Our English duo will now face Sweden in a third-place play-off on Saturday, July 6 at 4pm (UK time).
