Just two days after this weekend’s goalless draw against Yeovil Town, we’re back in Women’s Super League action when we host Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
THE OPPOSITION
After 13 games, the Reds sit just one point below us in the table with an inferior goal difference.
Scott Rogers’ side have found scoring easy enough, with Chelsea loanee Beth England boasting 12 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, but were guilty of giving away cheap goals earlier in the season.
Since the turn of the year, though, they have produced more convincing defensive performances, keeping six clean sheets in their last seven wins.
However, heavy defeats against Manchester City, Chelsea and Birmingham City have marred their record, and show that their defence can be targeted if we start the match on the front foot.
LAST TIME WE MET
Our last game against Liverpool will also give us confidence going into this game.
Despite a slow start, with England and former Gunner Caroline Weir both going close in the opening stages, we took the lead when Vivianne Miedema slotted home after initially seeing her penalty saved by Rebecca Flaherty.
Dominique Janssen then stole the show with an incredible strike. Collecting the ball on the left-hand side, the Netherlands midfielder shifted it on to her right foot and bent an unstoppable shot past the helpless Liverpool keeper.
And the evening got even better when Lisa Evans fired home our third from a tight angle to complete an clinical display in front of goal.
ONE TO WATCH
Janssen may have been brought in for her defensive solidity but the versatile midfielder has contributed at the other end of the pitch, too.
The 23-year-old scored her 10th goal since arriving at the club in 2015 during last week’s 3-1 win over Reading, and has beenan ever-present in Joe Montemurro’s side ever since he took over in November.
Usually playing the foil to two of Jordan Nobbs, Kim Little and Danielle van de Donk, Janssen offers stability and a platform for us to build our attacks from deep.
Not only that, but our win against Reading proved she is a danger from set-pieces and, as Liverpool can attest, can find the top corner from anywhere within 30 yards of goal. An unsung hero she may be, but she is certainly held in high regard within the club.
