Williamson - Last year felt like the turning point

Leah Williamson

Leah Williamson can remember last year’s Continental League Cup final triumph like it was yesterday.

The England defender starred at centre back as we kept a clean sheet against Manchester City, and she is hoping for a similar performance in Saturday’s rematch at Bramall Lane.

“Last year meant a lot,” she told Arsenal Player. “I’ve been here for quite a while now and we’ve always brought home silverware. I’ve always been lucky enough to make a final each year, but that just sort of felt like a bit of a turning point.

“It felt like it was what we wanted our future to be and it was really important for us to win that game. I didn’t even know it was full time when I celebrated my last-ditch tackle, I just celebrated my tackle because I was so relieved!

“The fact that the referee then blew her whistle was great. I think it was the same for all the girls. It really felt like the start of the journey without being cliche.

“This year, being the holders of the competition, you always want to have a convincing run. I think we’ve done that. We’ve brought quite a few of the youngsters through as well which is a good opportunity for them and a good opportunity for us to rotate the team.

“We know that City have a lot of pace and love to counter. Maybe they’re a bit similar to us in that they love to keep the ball and obviously only one team can do that at the weekend.

“We’re hoping that after our last performance against them, we’ll have a bit more control of the game to nullify their threats. If we can press properly, then hopefully the pace and the counter-attack for them won’t be much of an option.”
