When have Arsenal won the Premier League?

Arsenal celebrate winning the 1997/98 Premier League title

We have enjoyed a rich and remarkable history in the Premier League since its formation in 1992 from the First Division.

We had won the English league championship on 10 occasions before the rebranding and our success continued into the new era, lifting the Premier League in three seasons: 1997/98, 2001/02 and, most famous of all, 2003/04.

HOW DID arsenal WIN THE premier LEAGUE IN 1997/98?

Following Arsene Wenger’s appointment in October 1996, the 1997/98 campaign represented the Frenchman’s first full season in charge of the club.

Ahead of the campaign, Wenger brought in compatriots Emmanuel Petit and Giles Grimandi from Monaco, Wenger’s former club, as well as Marc Overmars from Ajax. Despite going unbeaten in the first 12 matches of the season, we struggled in November and December, losing four of six games to leave us 13 points behind Manchester United at the top of the table.

But a Boxing Day victory over Leicester City kick-started a remarkable run of 18 games without defeat, including a crucial victory at Old Trafford courtesy of an Overmars finish. That run catapulted us to within touching distance of a first Premier League title, knowing a home victory over Everton on May 3 would seal the deal.

A memorable day at Highbury saw an own goal, a double from Overmars and, of course, Tony Adams latching onto a Steve Bould through-ball to smash home and cap off a 4-0 victory to win the league. That, sums it all up.

After three years of Manchester United dominance, we were looking to reclaim the coveted prize and made a huge summer signing as Sol Campbell arrived from bitter rivals Tottenham on a free transfer.

Similar to 1997/98, we were playing catch-up after home defeats to Leeds United, Charlton Athletic and Newcastle United before the turn of the year. But an 11-match winning run saw us heading to Old Trafford in early May with a simple mission: win to become champions.

Without the likes of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp in the starting line-up, we produced a heroic performance as Sylvain Wiltord slotted home the winner to secure a famous league and cup double. We finished the campaign on 83 points having gone the whole season unbeaten on the road, as well as scoring in every single Premier League game.

HOW DID arsenal WIN THE premier LEAGUE IN 2003/04?

In September 2002, Wenger was criticised by some sections of the media for claiming we could go a whole league season unbeaten. Sadly, 2002/03 did not work out as planned as we surrendered top spot with just five games to spare.

Determined to prove the doubters wrong, Wenger brought in goalkeeper Jens Lehmann as we started the season with four wins on the spin. A dramatic 0-0 draw at Old Trafford was followed up by huge victories over title rivals Newcastle, Liverpool and Chelsea sending us top of the league.

We continued to stay unbeaten as comeback victories at Stamford Bridge and at home to Liverpool, thanks to a stunning Henry hat-trick, set us on course to a third league title, needing just a point at White Hart Lane on April 25.

Goals from Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires gave us a 2-2 draw as we repeated our 1971 triumph by winning the league at Tottenham. With four games remaining and the league in the bag, it was all about staying unbeaten. Draws against Birmingham City and Portsmouth and a win at Fulham meant one more game against already-relegated Leicester City stood between us and immortality.

A goal from former Gunner Paul Dickov stunned the hosts but second-half strikes from Henry and captain Vieira turned the game around as we secured our unbeaten campaign. 26 wins, 12 draws, 0 defeats. Invincible.
