Interview

‘We went for it, and just never stopped’

Leah Williamson

We extended our winning run in the Women’s Super League to four games on Sunday with a 5-0 win over Chelsea - but it could have been a different story.

Shortly after half-time with us leading 2-0, Drew Spence found a yard of space inside the box and looked to have a free shot at goal. Leah Williamson, however, was on hand to make a stunning last-ditch tackle to avert the danger.

We spoke to the England international after the game - and this is what she said:

on her assessment of the team’s performance…

I’m really happy and I’m happy for the girls. Our strikers have been putting in some great performances so far this season and everyone was going to say today if they didn’t do it that we can only do it against the other teams, so to come away from last year's winners with a win is brilliant. They’ve remained unbeaten at home for almost two years now so it’s pretty important for us.

on fighting back after a slow start…

Even on a personal note that wasn’t my best performance on the ball, but I think us defenders knew that we had a job today and like I say, we credit our strikers at the minute so we need to just give them the platform to go and do what they need to do. I think it was a bit shaky at the start, but we showed a great reaction and we really went for it and never stopped, so that’s really good.

on scoring five against a Chelsea side who only conceded 13 times in the WSL last season…

It’s not easy. This is my point - we’ve come here and played our game. I’m just really, really happy for the girls and I think that’s what they deserve. They’re great finishers and we’ve got some great attacking players in our team, and we’ve also got some great defenders as you’ve seen today, so that’s really important.

on her last-ditch tackle after the break…

Personally I don’t think I had a great game today on the ball, but my job is to be a defender and to help keep the ball out of the net. It looked dramatic but as long as it stays out of the net then I don’t really care how it happens.
