'We respect Chelsea, but need to play our game'

Montemurro in training

We will be looking to maintain our perfect start to the season on Sunday as we travel to Kingsmeadow to face Chelsea.

The Blues are the reigning champions of the Women’s Super League - but Joe Montemurro is confident that if we stick to our philosophy, we’ll be able to break them down.

“Chelsea are the best team in England at the moment,” he told Arsenal.com. “We need to be level-headed about it because it’s a league game, it’s three points and we need to make sure that we understand we’re playing away from home.

“They won the league and we need to show a level of respect, but we need to make sure we’re prepared to play our football and we’re there to give the game the quality it needs. It’s a big game and it’s a great spectacle for the league.

“We were in a growing process [last season] and in a growing phase and we were still developing as a unit. Whereas now I think there’s a little more belief in our process and what we’re trying to do.

“We can now afford to be a little more risky in certain areas because that’s our nature, that’s the way we play, and we just probably weren’t prepared. It’s just nice to have the preparation and to have played against big teams in pre-season to prepare for the big games against Chelsea and Manchester City.”
